Oia Sunset Point

The sunset from the Kastro (Byzantine castle ruins) at the northern tip of Oia is arguably the most famous sunset viewpoint in the Mediterranean — drawing hundreds of visitors every evening who applaud as the sun disappears below the caldera horizon. The best viewing position is the old kastro ruins themselves (arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset to secure a spot) or the rooftop terraces of nearby restaurants and hotels.

The village of Oia itself is worth arriving in the morning, before the cruise ship tourists flood in around 11am. The narrow caldera-edge lanes of blue-domed churches, cave houses and sugar-white walls are most beautiful in early morning light. The three-hour hike from Fira to Oia along the caldera rim offers a completely different perspective — and arrives in Oia in time for lunch and the afternoon light.
