Cloud 9 Beach

Cloud 9 is Asia's most celebrated surf break — a powerful, hollow, right-hand barrelling wave over a shallow coral reef approximately 200 metres offshore at General Luna, Siargao Island, Philippines. The wave has been drawing professional surfers from across the world since American surfer Mike Boyum discovered it in 1992 and described it in the surf press as a "perfect, hollow right-hander" — naming it Cloud 9 after a local brand of chocolate-filled wafer biscuits he found at a nearby sari-sari store. The annual Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, a professional competition held every September, brings WQS (World Qualifying Series) surfers and international surf media to the island for a week that represents the peak of Siargao's annual calendar.

The wave itself is not for beginners: Cloud 9 breaks over a shallow, exposed coral reef at low to mid tide, generating a fast, hollow right-hand barrel that can reach 2–4 metres during prime swell season (September–November). The lip throws out hard and the inside section is shallow enough to cause serious injury on falls — intermediate to advanced surf experience is a minimum requirement. Intermediate surfers can find the wave more forgiving on smaller days (1–1.5m) during the March–July period when the swells are less powerful. The boardwalk-equipped surf tower at the edge of the reef (rebuilt after Typhoon Odette devastated it in December 2021, fully operational again by late 2022) provides one of the finest surf spectator positions in Asia — elevated directly above the breaking wave, with the reef and barrel visible from above at the right swell angle.

For non-surfers, the Cloud 9 area rewards a visit for the spectacle alone: watching experienced surfers navigate the barrel from the boardwalk tower, particularly at sunset when the wave face is lit gold, is one of the great free experiences in the Philippines. The surrounding General Luna beach strip has the island's best restaurants, beach bars, and accommodation, with the Bravo Beach Resort and Kermit Surf & Restaurant consistently cited as the best value options.

Getting there: 4km from General Luna town centre by tricycle (50–100 PHP) or 15-minute walk north along the beach. Siargao Airport receives direct flights from Manila (55 minutes, multiple airlines). Best time to surf: September–November for the largest, most powerful waves; March–July for more manageable swells suitable for intermediate surfers. Best time to watch: Year-round at the boardwalk tower; sunset sessions are the most atmospheric.
